A 22-month-old Pennsylvania toddler was brought back to life after having no pulse during 101 minutes of CPR. After falling into a fast-moving icy stream, a neighbor found the miracle boy.
Gerald Martin had been playing with his brothers when he slipped and then fell into the stream. After he moved downstream about a quarter mile (402m), a neighbor found him approximately 30 minutes later.
When the neighbor found Martin he was lifeless and face-down in the water. Neighbors pulled the toddler from the 34F degree (1.1C) water, while first responders were already on the way.
Martin's mother then gathered her other children around her and prayed for her son. Medical technicians then performed CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) on the toddler.
Martin was then flown to Jane Weis Children's Hospital in Danville. Dr. Richard Lambert noted that when Martin arrived, he had no pulse and was not breathing "on his own," according to 11 Alive.
Dr. Lambert added that medically speaking, the toddler was "dead" for one hour and 41 minutes. There were no signs of life during that time.
Dr. Frank Maffei, another physician at the Children's Hospital, shared that Martin's body temperature dropped to around 75F (24C) degrees, about 25 degrees below the normal temperature. This state put the child's organs in a "state of protection."
Within time Martin's body temperature slowly increased. Then his heart rate and pulse returned within time.
Dr. Maffei referred to Martin's recovery as "striking." The toddler returned to his home Sunday and is progressing to a full recovery, according to ABC News.
