Ford's new in-car system will be able to limit the driver's speed depending on a preset limit or an intelligent scan of visible road signs.
Taking a step back from the autonomous driving hype, Ford developed a new speed-limiting tech dubbed as the "Intelligent Speed Limiter," which will be launched o the public alongside its new S-Max car models in Europe.
The Michigan-based carmaker said the new tech will keep the roads a bit safer and will help drivers avoid fines or tickets.
"Drivers are not always conscious of speeding... sometimes only becoming aware they were going too fast when they receive a fine in the mail or are pulled over by law enforcement," said Stefan Kappes ,one of the safety supervisors at Ford,
Kappes added that the Intelligent Speed Limiter tech will also help decrease driving stress while keeping them within the speed limit, according to BBC.
Ford said that over 15,000 drivers in the U.K. received fines for speeding in 2013. The car company is urging drivers to spend on the new tech to help reduce the number of car accidents.
The Intelligent Speed Limiter will stop pumping gas to the engine if the car is near the preset speed limit. It will sound a warning that will let the driver know they are closing in on the speed limit.
Drivers can still override the new tech by stepping firmly on the accelerator, but they will only be able to churn out an additional five MPH over the speed limit, according to Gizmodo.
However, Ford is not the first one to invent the advanced driving assistance technology.
China's Volvo offers a software that detects cyclists on the road and will apply the brakes if it detects a bicycle in front of the car.
Honda in Japan also utilizing a similar tech called "False Start Prevention Function," which prevents the driver from driving forward if there is a very near object.
