Apple is reportedly releasing three different models of its smartphone this year, one of which is the 4-inch iPhone 6C.

Not contented with the upcoming release of the Apple Watch and the MacBook Air and Pro, the Cupertino-based company is rumored to launch an iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus and the rumored iPhone 6C.

All new models of the iPhone will be fitted with LTPS panels for the display screen, which will be supplied by Japan Display, LG Display and Sharp for the iPhone 6C and iPhone 6S Plus. The iPhone 6S' screen will be supplied by LG and Japan Display.

Additionally, all of the screens will be equipped with Corning Gorilla Glass protection. It is not known what variation of the glass Apple will be installing for the new iPhones.

For the processors, Apple will be using A9 microchips for the 6S variants, while the A8 will be used for the smaller iPhone 6C. All three will sport fingerprint and NFC technologies.

The iPhone 6C is expected to be made by ODM Wistron, according to Digitimes.

Wistron, who declined to make a comment regarding the iPhone 6C, recently partnered with Apple as a manufacturer, along with Compal Electronics. The Taiwan-based manufacturer handles the much older iPhones from Apple while the latter makes iPads.

However, some think that Apple's decision to launch a 6C variation is a little bit late.

"It will launch alongside the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus in September putting it a generation behind," said Gordon Kelly, a contributor for Forbes.

Kelly also said that Apple will be making the same mistake of treating smaller sized smartphones as second-class handsets.

There is no exact date on when the new iPhones will be launched.
