Tim McGraw was recently slammed by gun rights advocates after it was confirmed that he will be headlining a July concert for the benefit of the Sandy Hook victims and their families.

Earlier this week, the country singer himself confirmed the concert and provided details via his Twitter account.

"JUST ANNOUNCED! Tim to play benefit for @sandyhook on July 17th at @XFINITYTheatre!," he captioned the official concert poster.

McGraw's upcoming concert will specifically benefit the non-profit group Sandy Hook Promise. The event was organized by the families and friends of the victims shot at the Sandy Hook Elementary School back in 2012, according to USA Today.

The concert was borne out of the non-profit group's desire to prevent gun violence and is also aimed at addressing mental health issues, the same publication noted.

Upon learning of the recent controversy, McGraw issued an official statement on Thursday clarify his stand on gun use and his involvement in the upcoming benefit concert.

"I've never been one to take on controversial issues - I'm a singer. I do feel strongly about honoring and supporting the Sandy Hook community and will be making a donation to a local organization," he wrote.

McGraw also stated that he supports gun ownership, primarily because he himself owns a gun. However, the country singer stressed the importance of using the gun responsibly and safely.

"The concert is meant to do something good for a community that is recovering," he concluded his statement.
