The involved models of the Mini Cooper cars are model year 2005-2006 and the Mini Cooper S which were produced between January 2005 and November 2006.  The model year 2005-2008 of Mini Cooper Convertibles which were manufactured between January 2005 and July 2008 are also included in the recall, 24/7 Wall St. reported.

There are about 59,270 of the 2005-2006 models and 32,530 of the 2005-2008 models that are affected by the recall.

According to CNN, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration explained on Saturday that due to the faulty sensors in the affected cars, there is a possibility that the passenger airbag would not trigger on impact during a crash.

NHTSA explained that the sensor might not detect that there is an existing passenger on the front seat passenger-side which will not let the airbag deploy once there is a crash thus the recall was made.

BMW will receive all the affected cars with the affected models mentioned and replace the detection mat sensor without any charges disclosed NHTSA.

The car maker has estimated that about ten percent of these cars possibly have the defective sensor mat.
