Cisco ex chief futurist Dave Evans has recently shared his thoughts on Internet of Things (IoT). Evans said while people imagine everything to get connected to make IoT work, if the technology does not work for people, there is no reason to believe that Internet of Things is making a difference.
According to Evans, repeating the mistakes of the past is possible if we do not learn from the mistakes. The chance of a massive failure is imminent if we do not realize the current faults.
Today's IoT has challenges and bottlenecks that were common with Internet in the 1990s, according to Fast Company.
The idea of IoT working perfectly can get blurred if it is not made workable for common people. IoT could fail like the 'Network of networks' if we do not get it right, right now, according to Evans.
The "network of networks" had a problem at the protocol level in the nascent days of internet. With IoT, the problem is similar, although applicable only to the end user.
One of the common problems is that most devices now have their own apps, and to get anything done, people need to manage too many apps, which leads to create a disconnected, confused and unpleasant user experience, Evans wrote in a Tech Crunch report.
Moreover, there are too many technical jargons used in case of IoT and it only creates confusion. This could make people skeptical and uninterested in taking part as users of the latest technologies. They may also revert back to the old standards.
However, the latest and the most important inventions in IoT are still pending.
"If someone finds a better way to manage Internet of Things, "We'll all be like, 'Oh, that's how it was supposed to work the whole time,'"said Zach Supalla, CEO of Spark, a company making hardware to connect products, said.
For Evans, "IoT is here, but our work is just beginning."
