On Saturday, April 25, an American teenager named Collin Burns set the world record by solving Rubik's 3x3x3 contraption in just 5.253 seconds at a Rubik's Cube competition, CNET reported.
The teenager is one of eight people who have correctly solved the jumbled cube in less than 10 seconds during an official competition, according to Rubik's Cube World Records website. The result has not been uploaded to the World Cube Association (WCA) database yet. However, a representative for World Cube Association confirmed that Burns officially broke the world record in the 3x3x3 single solve category. He further said that the record has been performed in an official competition and all the rules were being followed.
Mats Valk from the Netherlands held the previous world record. He finished a 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube in 5.55 seconds back in 2013.
In 2014, Poland's Marcin Kowalczyk finished a 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube blindfolded in 21.17 seconds, while Canadian teenager Antoine Cantin holds the world record for the quickest one-handed completion at 8.75 seconds in the same year, according to Wired. Not only that, Brazil's Gabriel Pereira Campanha completed a Rubik's Cube with feet in 25.14 seconds.
The Rubik's Cube was invented in 1974 and was initially called the Magic Cube prior to being licensed to Rubik. A famous puzzle in the 1980s, it contains six faces covered by nine stickers in yellow, orange, green, blue, red and white.
In 2014, the Rubik's Cube ranked #11 on Time magazine's list of the 13 most influential toys of all time.
