Sheldon takes watching television seriously. Once he decides to watch, he will not quit even if the quality drops. Amy finds it extremely frustrating that while they were kissing, Sheldon wasn't completely with him. Instead, his mind was wandering off, thinking about a television show.

Amy then points out that for a man who is obsessing over a speedster, Sheldon has been very slow in taking their relationship to the next level. For Sheldon, Amy should appreciate that her opinion matters to him.

Sheldon opens up to Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting). The conversation turns to his friend's engagement, which, according to Sheldon, has gone too long without a wedding date. Toward the end of "The Big Bang Theory" Season 8 finale, Leonard and Penny are driving off to Las Vegas, all set to get married without their friends.

While there's a happy ending for Leonard and Penny, Sheldon's relationship with Amy takes a sad turn. "The Flash" interruption becomes the last straw for Amy. She tells Sheldon that she has been patient, but it is time for her to re-evaluate their relationship. Sheldon is taken aback. Amy hangs up abruptly, voice breaking.

In the final moments of "The Big Bang Theory" Season 8 finale, Sheldon turns to a figure of Gollum on his desk. Obviously hurt and lost, Sheldon then drops the line that ends the season:

"Well, Gollum, you're an expert on rings. What do I do with this one?" (Sheldon opens his desk drawer and takes out an engagement ring.)
