Chinese actress Li Bingbing has expressed her views about Hollywood during the 68th annual Cannes Film Festival, where she attended the premiere screening of “Carol” on May 17, 2015, in Cannes, France.
Li is currently at the Cannes Film Festival as part of her duty as ambassador for L'Oreal.
Well-known in China, the actress has only started to become recognizable to American audiences for her role in "Transformers 4: Age of Extinction."
Although her acting stint in Hollywood films has helped her name become more recognizable overseas, Li said she does not feel the need to go to Hollywood since China is taking over the box-office market.
"There's a shift in the global movie box office. China is a huge box-office market. The world is changing and a lot of things are leaning toward this part of the world. If you're looking for more money then you have to go to China. It doesn't matter if we go or they come to us, for sure you will see more collaborations in the future," the actress was quoted as saying.
The Entertainment Weekly has reported that China has surpassed Japan as the second-largest film market in the world, as box-office revenues rose 30 percent, reaching $2.7 billion last year.
The report said that new movie screens are being built across China at the rate of approximately 10 per day, which could exceed the U.S. as the world's top film territory in five years. For this reason, Hollywood is willing to capitalize on the growth and development of the film industry in China, the report added.
"China is on most producers' minds all the time now," Barry Levine, producer of the sci-fi film "Oblivion," said. "It is a giant market if you can reach it. But you have to play it smartly."
