Jimmy Kimmel could not hold back his tears when he paid a touching tribute to his good friend, David Letterman, on the most recent episode of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" Letterman, meanwhile, retired from "The Late Show" on Wednesday.

Ahead of his departure from the late night talk show, Kimmel remembered how, as a young boy, he would always watch "Late Night With David Letterman."

Kimmel went to narrate how Letterman's talk show was so much different from all the other talk shows at that time. According to him, "Late Night With David Letterman" was original, according to E! News.

The host of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" noted another reason that made Letterman's talk show extremely popular during his time. He said, it was because Letterman himself did not look all too excited to be on the show. At times, it even felt like he was embarrassed to be there.

"He never pretended to be excited. His way of saying things was so subtle that a lot of times the people he was talking to did not know he was joking," he said.

Meanwhile, Letterman officially retired from his show on Wednesday night after 33 years. The all-star edition of his final episode brought about a sense of joy and sadness for all his guests, his fans and even himself, The New York Times reported.

In an attempt to calm everybody down, Letterman even joked and said, "Do me a favor. Save a little for my funeral."

Letterman will be succeeded by Stephen Colbert starting September.
