Chinese universities remain among the top academic institutions in the world, according to newly released rankings published by Quacquarelli Symonds. In the latest Worldwide University Rankings by Subject, seven Chinese universities were included among the Top 50 in the world.

Peking University, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University, Tongji University, China Agricultural University, and Beijing Normal University were ranked by QS as some of the best in the world by subjects offered.

"Such good rankings show that China has been rewarded after investing in higher education over the past 20 years," said Ben Sowter, chief inspector of Research at Quacquarelli Symonds.

"The success of Chinese universities also represents a global power transfer. Asian colleges have become strong competitors to those in the U.K. and the United States, especially in the sciences, technology, math, and engineering," Sowter added.

Despite the consistent performance of Chinese universities in the QS rankings, some people have opined that the country shouldn't grow complacent.

"Chinese universities still have a long way to go, compared with the world's top universities, and people should not be too excited about Chinese performance in world university rankings," said Jiang Guohua, the Academic Committee Director of cuaa.net.

A hefty amount of work was required to come up with the latest worldwide university rankings.

Quacquarelli Symonds, a British company that specializes in education abroad, compiled professional opinions from 41,910 university officials and 85,062 scholars from across the globe. They also took into consideration 17.3 million academic publications and over 100 million bits of data analysis.

The result is a highly regarded rankings list, which is often considered as a comprehensive guide to the world's top universities.
