The huge, bright-colored panther chameleon is a reptile species found in Madagascar. A new study of the creature's vibrant color variation and DNA structure revealed that it is actually 11 unique species.

A panther chameleon's sheer size is amazing. Its average length is about 45 cm (17.7 in.), while males can grow up to a length of 50 cm (19.7 in.).

The amazing lizard is widely distributed on certain coasts of Madagascar. However, people have also introduced the panther chameleon to other local regions such as the nearby French island Réunion.

The University of Geneva, Switzerland study was led by Dr. Michel Milinkovitch.  His scientific team collected blood samples from 324 panther lizards, representing the entire species distribution.

Scientists then used high-resolution color images to document the blood samples. They sequenced and analyzed each of the colorful lizards' DNA in their lab.

Milinkovitch stated that the DNA tests showed that there was little interbreeding among the lizard populations. The mathematical analysis of the 325 photos showed that minor color patterns could predict individual chameleons' genetic groups, according to Sci-News.

These new scientific findings showed that several "geographical populations" should be classified as unique panther chameleon species.

Easily the most incredible feature of the panther chameleon is its eye-catching bright colors.  Its skin variation differs based on the reptile's habitat and include vibrant red, orange, and blue. The unique feature distinguishes the chameleon from other lizard types, according to Gizmodo.

The biologists also created a classification key for chameleon colors. This allows scientists the ability to identify chameleon species by using the naked eye.

Their new "biodiversity management" method will help in the goal of chameleon conservation in Madagascar. That is due to the widespread destroying of the forest habitat for agricultural purposes and firewood production.
