Huawei Marine Networks, a global submarine network provider based in China, has announced on May 25, Monday, that it was tasked to build the Malaysia-Cambodia-Thailand (MCT) undersea cable system after winning the bid for its construction, the Xinhua News Agency reported.
The report said that the members of the consortium include Cambodia's Telcotech, Telekom Malaysia Berhad, and Symphony Communication of Thailand.
According to the statement released by Huawei, the MCT cable system, which spans approximately 1,300 kilometers, will connect Cherating in Malaysia and Rayong in Thailand, with a branching unit from the main trunk to connect into Sihanoukville in Cambodia, which will also provide access to neighboring countries such as Myanmar and Laos through further connection to terrestrial-based networks.
"We're honored to partner with our customers and start working on the development and construction of the MCT optical superhighway to deliver state-of-the-art infrastructure which will contribute to the economic growth and development of the Indochina region," Ma Yanfeng, vice president of Huawei Marine Networks, was quoted as saying.
Huawei said that the MCT cable system has a total design capacity exceeding 30 Tbps and supports the latest 100G Ethernet technology. The system will be exclusively built for the system and will be ready for commercial operation by the end of 2016.
The Chinese company said that it would install its optical amplifier that carries up to six fiber pairs and sports a "slim-line" titanium housing that would enable them to simultaneously lay and bury the cables under the seabed.
Huawei Marine Networks is a joint venture between Huawei Technologies and Global Marine Systems.
