J.K. Rowling thrilled United Kingdom fans after announcing on Twitter on Friday that a play "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" will hit London theaters in 2016. The play will be about an untold story in the Harry Potter series, which is an exciting way to extend the wizarding universe for the fans.

In a series of tweets, Rowling confirmed that she wrote a new story, which will be released summer next year as a play. The tweets came on the day the first book, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" was first published in the United Kingdom 18 years ago, according to CNN.

After several tweets relating to her announcement, she said nothing more as she does not want to spoil what she believes would be a "real treat" for Potter fans. However, she confirmed and later reiterated several times that the play is not a prequel.

However, Rowling anticipated that fans would ask why a play should be more suitable than a novel for the story. She said in a tweet that "when audiences see the play they will agree that it was the only proper medium for the story."

The story was collaborated by Rowling, English theatre director John Tiffany and playwright Jack Thorne, Business Insider reported.

Tickets for the "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" play will be sold starting this fall, with announcements happening in July. It will be produced by Harry Potter Theatrical Productions, Playground Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions.

Meanwhile, "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them", another Harry Potter spinoff and which was announced earlier this year, will also be released in 2016.
