Prior to the commemoration of the World Population Day on July 11, the state health authority of China has called for heightened care for vulnerable groups.

For this year, the theme of the celebration is "Advocating the New Style of Marriage and Child-raising and Caring for the Vulnerable Populations," as issued in a document by the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC).

In line with the celebration, the NHFPC will be holding activities in Wuhan, Hubei Province, this month, centering on civilized and scientific concepts of marriage and childcare.

The series of events also calls for more extensive care to the marginalized people who are least able to do so for themselves.

Moreover, the commission urged its local counterparts to initiate campaigns and organize related activities.

In response to the call, Qinghe County's officials held publicity activities on June 6, handing out brochures containing information about family planning, and prenatal and postnatal care.

Health officials from Shandong Province's Longui Township also organized the same activities, furthermore providing public services such as free physical checks to young adults.

The World Population Day was first established in 1989 by the United Nations with the aim of raising awareness concerning worldwide population issues. This year, the organization revealed the theme as "Vulnerable Populations in Emergencies."

Official statistics show that, globally, more than 50 million are displaced because of war and disasters, three quarters of which are women, children and the youth. These groups have also been exposed to greater risks of assault, violence, abuse and reproductive health diseases.
