Samsung Electronics recently announced the specs of its flagship tablet and answer to the Apple iPad Air 2. The new Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 will be thinner and lighter compared to its Apple rival.

According to PC World, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 will be released in two variants depending on its size. There is a 9.7-inch and 8-inch model. The bigger of the two weighs around 389 grams while the smaller one weighs around 265 grams. In comparison, the Apple iPad Air 2 weighs 439 grams.

The two Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 model is fitted with a strong metal frame that is about 5.6mm thin. Both models will also have a 2048 x 1536 resolution rendered on a Super AMOLED display screen. The resolution of the new devices were slightly downgraded compared to their predecessors which boasts a 2560 x 1600 display resolution.

The fingerprint scanner, which is becoming popular in newly released device, is also present on both models of the Galaxy Tab S2. Both devices will also use Samsung's own octa-core Exynos 5433 chipset which is composed of four Cortex A57 cores clocked at 1.9GHz and four Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.53GHz. The chipset has an integrated Mali graphics processing unit clocked at 700MHz.

The two Galaxy Tab S2 models sport 3GB of RAM and will be available in two storage variants, 32GB and 64GB, as well as storage expansion option via the microSDXC support.

In terms of camera, both will have 8-megapixel rear facing main camera and a 2.1-megapixel front facing camera. Both will support Wi-Fi, BlueTooth and have a microUSB 2.0 port. The two Galaxy Tab S2 will run on the Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system, Samsung has yet to confirm whether it will support the Android M OS.

In terms of battery power, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7-inch model will have a more powerful 5,870mAh battery while the smaller model will have a 4,000mAh battery.

According to Wired, the Galaxy Tab S2 will hit the market sometime in August. Samsung has yet to release the official price list for its upcoming flagship tablets.
