A recent study reveals that a particular ingredient in the cannabis plant could become a new use of medical marijuana. CBD, a chemical compound in pot, helps to heal the fractures in broken bones quicker and stronger, which could increase public support for weed's legalization.

The research was conducted by Israeli scientists from Tel Aviv University and Hebrew University. It was recently published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.

Scientists learned the healing benefits of a group of chemicals called cannabidiol, or CBD. The compound is non-psychoactive, so people do not get high, according to Stuff.

Dr. Yankel Gabet, one lead researcher, said in a public statement that CBD improves the maturing of the "collagenous matrix," which produces new bone tissue minerals. The healed bone becomes sturdier.

Researchers gave CBD to rats with femur fractures in the upper leg. The broken bones showed major improvement two months later, according to Huffington Post.

Meanwhile, after a second group of rodents received a mix of CBD and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, the researchers made a conclusion. CBD itself was a helpful treatment.

The scientists explained that the endocannabinoid system regulates the skeleton, so the human body and brain are designed to respond to cannabinoids. That includes those in weed. Therefore, vaping has also become a popular weed consumption technique in recent times. Several studies have recently shown the medical benefits of marijuana, which could control blood sugar, treat post-traumatic stress order, and lower human immunodeficiency virus' (HIV) spread. Other CBD studies also exist. The compound could be effective in treating multiple sclerosis (MS), and types of cancer such as leukemia.

CBD can be used in 17 states of the United States for medical purposes or research, while 23 other U.S. states have legalized medicinal marijuana. However, it is a "Schedule 1" drug. The federal government has ruled that cannabis, along with heroin and LSD, is a very dangerous drug and has no "accepted medical use."
