With the success of Colin Trevorrow's "Jurassic World," Universal Studios has officially announced a sequel to the dinosaur film.
It is yet to be confirmed if Trevorrow will direct the said sequel, but he is set to co-pen the sequel's script with Derek Connolly, according to Comic Book. Steven Spielberg, who directed the 1993 original "Jurassic Park," along with Frank Marshall, will co-produce the film.
"Guardians of the Galaxy" actor Chris Pratt and "The Twilight Saga" actress Bryce Dallas Howard will both return in the blockbuster's sequel, as per The Wrap.. However, other cast members who will reprise their roles have yet to be confirmed.
After its release on June 12, Trevorrow's "Jurassic World" has made an estimated domestic gross of $614 million and an estimated foreign gross of $902 million, for a total of an estimated $1.5 billion worldwide. This has made the film the third top grossing film of all time, topping Joss Whedon's "The Avengers: Age of Ultron."
"Jurassic World" serves as the fourth installment of the "Jurassic Park" franchise and is set 22 years after the events in Isla Nublar in Steven Spielberg's "Jurassic Park" in 1993. It featured a fully operational park, along with the creation of a dinosaur hybrid, the Indominus Rex. At this point, the exact plot details of the sequel have yet to be revealed.
Along with Pratt and Howard, "Jurassic World" starred Ty Simpkins, Nick Robinsons, Judy Greer, Omar Sy, Vincent D'Onofrio, Irrfan Khan, and BD Wong, among others.
The "Jurassic World" sequel is slated to premiere in theaters on June 22, 2018.
