At the recent Television Critics Association Press Tour, Straczynski said that they are still waiting for a confirmation from Netflix. According to IGN, many "Sense8" fans thought that that the renewal will be announced soon given that "Bojack Horseman" has been picked up for a third season.

Straczynski said that they are "cautiously optimistic" however admitted that the renewal is ultimately Netflix's decision. When the showrunner was asked about his rumored five-year plan for the series, Straczynski admitted that he already had a vision of where the characters would be years from now.

Although planning ahead did not help "Sense8" secure a renewal, Straczynski shared that knowing where the story and characters are heading was a crucial step in the writing process. He added that it was always better to think long term.

In spite of receiving good reviews after its first season, some speculate that "Sense8" will ultimately get cancelled given its high production cost. Female First pointed out that Netflix has a history of announcing a show's renewal even before it airs its season finale. In the past, it even renewed a series before it premiered on the streaming service.

The publication speculated that if no announcement has been made by the end of August, it could mean that Netflix decided to cancel the series only after one season.
