While Gray conveyed his interest in Marvel's "Black Panther," it is still vague if he already had a talk with the studio or he just merely expressed his thought and awareness for the upcoming film, according to Cinema Blend.

In 2012, Gray was set to direct "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." However, he chose to direct his upcoming "Straight Outta Compton" over the superhero film, leaving the latter to Joe Russo and Anthony Russo. Since Gray's "Straight Outta Compton" has been getting commendations from film critics, it would be interesting to see the director to have some negotiations with Marvel Studios.

Aside from "Straight Outta Compton," Gray is also known for his other works, which include action crime film "The Negotiator," action thriller "The Italian Job," and crime thriller film "Law Abiding Citizen." Since production for his upcoming music drama film has been completed, Gray's schedule may be open for directing another film, like "Black Panther."

"Get on Up" actor Chadwick Boseman will play the role of Black Panther. With the human alter ego T'Challa, Black Panther is the prince of the African island Wakanda, which serves as a rich source of the mineral vibranium. Vibranium is known as the prime component of Captain America's shield and Ultron's armor.

"Black Panther" is slated to premiere on July 6, 2018. Watch Gray's interview here:
