The upcoming Chinese crime film “Ulterior Motive” (Bie You Dong Ji) has released its official music video to promote its premiere in theaters across China next month.

The thriller, which centers on a 20-year-old kidnapping case with a shocking secret, is the directorial film debut of Hong Kong filmmaker Arthur Wong.

Wong, a nine-time winner of Hong Kong Film Awards in cinematography, showed the love-themed MV during a promotional event in Beijing. The theme song is sung by Yu Haoming, a Mandopop singer best known for performing at the singing competition "Super Boy."

"I did watch the movie before I would sing the song for it. I understand that a theme that the film tries to convey is all the love and hatred can be forgotten as time goes by," Yu said. "Thus, the lyric is about moths flying to a flame. Another thing that impresses me a lot is the well-arranged suspense part of the film."

"Ulterior Motive" features an ensemble cast, including Chinese actress Qin Lan, veteran Hong Kong-based actor Simon Yam and Chinese-American Actor Archie Kao.

While promoting the movie, Kao pointed that the newly released theme song will provide an "emotional understanding" to "Ulterior Motive."

"I feel like the mood is perfect for the song, because metaphorically it kind of represents two extremes of love, and what you'll do for love. And I think it's all asking what the lyrics for, because I think it perfectly encapsulates the theme of our story," said Kao.

Scheduled to hit theaters on Sept. 17, "Ulterior Motive" has sent Chinese social media buzzing about its reported use of interlocking suspense in its narrative.

The true motive of the crime central to the film's plot will be revealed step by step, leaving viewers to ponder over the interwoven feelings of love and hatred, according to a report from China.org.cn.
