A readers’ meeting organized by leading Chinese sociologist and sexologist Li Yinhe was held at BELENCRE’s parlor in Beijing’s China Central Place on Aug. 16. Known as the first female sexologist in the country, Li discussed gender and sexuality-related topics, including homosexuality and same-sex marriage in contemporary China.

Considered an expert in sociology and sexology, Li has authored a number of publications. Her work, which includes "The Subculture of Homosexuality," "The Sexuality and Love of Chinese Women," and "Sexuality and Marriage in China," are highly influential in Chinese society.

Despite her expertise and knowledge in the subject matter, Li has been subject to various controversy and polarized public opinion, as she's the first woman to dive deep into a topic considered taboo in China.

At the event, 63-year-old Li openly and readily answered questions thrown at her by avid readers and supporters.

When asked if homosexuals don't abide by any limits in morality and freedom, Li quoted the philosopher Foucault and said that despite the absence of division between morality and law, homosexuals have so far remained within the confines of morality.

Li also expressed her delight regarding the legalization of same-sex marriage in the United States. When asked if the same ruling can be done in China, she said that it's hard to make any predictions, given no Asian country has legalized same-sex marriage.

"The Chinese society as a whole tends to avoid issues concerning homosexuality. And another obstacle is that there remains deficiency in the mechanism for minority groups to fully enjoy their rights and interests."

"I'm optimistic about the legitimation of same-sex marriage in China because it is a global tide. But the timetable is hard to tell," she added.
