"The Winds of Winter" author George R.R. Martin, unlike his "A Song of Ice and Fire" fans, is not in a rush to finish the sixth book anytime soon. He even hinted that HBO series "Game of Thrones" may possibly air its final episode before he finished the novel.
In an interview with GeekWire, Martin hinted that the "A Song of Ice and Fire" novel is not going to end soon. He added that the books may just outlive its TV adaptation. He pointed out that the HBO executives are deviating from the original storyline, which could mean that their version of the series may be much shorter than his.
Executive producers Davide Benioff and Dan Weiss revealed that they only envisioned "Game of Thrones" to last for seven, maximum of eight seasons. Speaking to Winter is Coming, the showrunners revealed that they would not be willing to stretch the story farther than that.
Benioff and Weiss shared that they have tried to stay true to the series, as much as possible. However, given that there is a team of writers doing 60-page scripts compared to Martin's one-man show of 1,500 pages, it is only natural to assume that the adaptation would eventually catch up and surpass the novel.
Although Martin is still in the middle of writing the sixth book, it was revealed that he has already made up his mind on what the ending would be like. The author shared that he has actually spoken to the "Game of Thrones" producers about his idea.
Benioff and Weiss teased that the ending is "100 percent" satisfying and definitely worth the wait.
