The Philips Hue Go is a small, bowl-shaped portable lamp that can be placed on a nightstand, coffee table, bookshelf, or desk. What distinguishes the lighting fixture from traditional lamps is the Philips smart light bulb that uses a mobile app to light up in one of a possible 16 million different colors.
The $100 price tag is quite steep for a tiny lamp. However, at $60 even the smart light bulbs are over half the device's cost.
One of the most noticeable features of the Hue Go is the basic, minimalist design. The small home appliance features the size of a huge grapefruit that is cut in half, a single button, and a small piece in the back to adjust it to an upright or angled position, according to Mashable.
Hue Go's button allows users to toggle between its preset colors. They include two white lights and five color options from red to violet. The light spectrum ranges include catchy names such as Cozy Candle, Enchanted Forest, and Sunday Coffee.
If a user wants to cycle through a rainbow of hues, they must double-press the button and then hold it. Releasing the button will select the current color.
Users can choose colors based on their moods. For example, a red hue could help to revitalize them, while green could help them to unwind and relax.
The Philips' smart lamp is powered by a 6-watt LED bulb glowing at 300 lumens. It can operate while plugged into an outlet, or by its rechargeable lithium-ion battery with a 3-hour charge life.
The Hue Go app is simple. It can be used to switch the smart lamp on or off, change the brightness, and toggle between preset or customized lighting.
One drawback of the Hue Go is using the app to access the mini lamp's 16 million possible colors. Users must purchase a Hue Lux starter kit, which includes a few lightbulbs and the Bridge wireless receiver to link an Internet router and Philips smart lamp. The cost is a pricey $80 or so, according to Slash Gear.
