President Xi Jinping has underscored the importance of national and ethnic unity as the key to stability in Tibet, as he pledged to work on long-term, comprehensive stability and waged an "unswerving" anti-separatism battle, the China Daily reported.

"Key efforts in the work for Tibet should be spent on ensuring national unity and consolidating ethnic unity, realizing long-term and comprehensive social stability as an obligatory task," Xi said during a two-day meeting related to the Tibet Autonomous Region held in Beijing that ended on Tuesday, Aug. 25.

Xi also urged the country to take a firm initiative in the battle against separatism, adding that ethnic groups should be encouraged to communicate with each other.

The Chinese leader also called on government to intensify its efforts to improve the people's quality of living and their cultural lives while preserving the ecological environment.

As Xi reviewed the development and progress that Tibet has achieved in the past six decades, he urged participants to help fight against separatist activities by the Dalai (Lama) group, and depend on local officials and people of all ethnic groups to create long-term policies and measures to address the root cause of separatism.

Xi said that social stability would serve as the basis for advancing development and prosperity for people from all ethnic groups in Tibet.

The report said that the meeting also reviewed the previous work undertaken on Tibet, as a new course for regional development for Sichuan, Yunnan, Gansu and Qinghai Provinces was also planned.

Xi also called on officials in the region to ally with the Communist Party of China Central Committee to maintain unity among the ranks. He added that the cadres and the public should continue to focus on reform and innovation and keep the spirit of Tibet's older generation such as dedication and hard work.

On the other hand, Premier Li Keqiang said that Tibet's reform and innovation need various support measures, which are crucial to achieve the goal of building a well-off society in Tibet.

Li identified the five driving forces that should be combined as efforts from the government and the market, internal and external forces, an open policy for domestic and international markets, coordinated development of rural construction and urbanization, and a balance between exploitation and ecological protection.
