China's box office over the week ending on Aug. 30 was ruled by the Hollywood blockbuster "Terminator Genisys," which pulled in 352 million yuan ($55 million) after just one week.
The film's worldwide ticket was at 530 million yuan on Aug. 30, after opening on Aug. 23.
"Terminator Genisys" is part of the recent trend of Hollywood films making a large portion of their earnings from the Chinese box office. Despite the government only letting in 34 foreign films a year, Hollywood has been more and more Chinese-centric.
Hollywood film studios have even started having domestic partners in China in order to produce films in the country. A notable case has been the recent partnership between Warner Bros. and China Media Capital, which is a long-term agreement to produce Chinese-language films.
Second in the box office is domestic film "The Hundred Regiments Offensive," which is a morale-boosting tale about a large-scale offensive by 105 Chinese regiments during the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression in 1940. The film earned 142 million yuan, also in its opening week.
Domestic thriller "The Dead End" won the third spot, grossing 123 million yuan this week since its release on Aug. 27.
"Go Away Mr. Tumor," the emotional story based on the life of a cartoonist who loses her battle with cancer, took the fourth spot, earning 62.7 million yuan this week. The film has grossed a total of 485 million yuan since it opened on Aug. 13.
The last slot on the top five belongs to the domestic live action CGI hybrid "Monster Hunt," which is the highest grossing Chinese film of all time. The film grossed 55.8 million yuan in the week, bringing its total earnings to 2.39 billion yuan on Aug. 30 since it started showing on July 16.
