New data shows that a bad diet is the top cause of early deaths worldwide, as the unhealthy food can cause diabetes, strokes, and heart disease. A poor diet, which includes eating too few fruits, vegetables, and grains; and eating too much salt, sugar, and red meat, was the biggest risk factor and caused more fatalities than alcohol and smoking.

The study was conducted by the United States' Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME). It discovered that high blood pressure is globally the top cause of premature death in nations, according to The Independent. Key factors include a bad diet, little exercise, and obesity.

Unhealthy eating was the top cause of death, contributing to diabetes, strokes, and diseases. This often included the consumption of sugary beverages and red meat.

The study was an update of the 2010 Global Burden of Disease's report. It is widely considered the most respected research on the causes of illness and death.

The study included data from 108 nations, from 1990 to 2013. It examined 79 risk factors linked to premature deaths.

Smoking was typically the top cause of early death in developed countries. However, the number one cause of premature death in South and South-East Asia was air pollution.

Meanwhile, in Latin America and the Middle East the top risk for poor health was a sky-high body mass index (BMI). That results in obesity.

The study also included various other high risk causes of early death. They included poor sanitation, child malnutrition, and unsafe drinking water, according to NDTV.
