The cancellation of "Under the Dome" after season 3 came as a surprise not just to fans but to the series producers. Neal Baer shared that they only found out that CBS cancelled the series after they shot the finale episode.
Speaking to Yahoo! TV, Baer shared that they were also taken aback by the cancellation. He said that the decision from the CBS executives were only finalized after the production for the series finale was finished. The showrunner joked that after seeing the last episode, the producers thought that it was already a satisfying conclusion to the series.
The publication pointed out that when they heard about the announcement, some fans were worried that ending may be too abrupt. Some were reportedly worried that it will end with a cliff hanger, leaving many questions unanswered.
Baer, however, explained that regardless if "Under the Dome" got cancelled or renewed, they would still go with the same ending. He added that there was not really any last-minute changes to the script.
"It was very planned out. It all makes sense with Sam, with Eva, Dawn, Barbie, Barbie going back to Julia."
When asked about the possibility of a season 4 airing on streaming services, like "The Mindy Project" and "Longmire," Baer admitted that he is not holding his hopes up. He, however, was quick to add that it may happen in the future. He added that "strangers things have happened."
Meanwhile, Chicago Tribune pointed out that the CBS series should have ended in its first season. The outlet claimed that it was better off following the limited-series format, adding that it would provide more room for a direct adaptation for the Stephen King novel adaptation.
