After conducting the first World Congress on Marxism in Beijing last week, the country is optimistic that the ideology will aid in solving its growing social and economic problems ahead.

The event, named "Marxism and the Development of The Human Race" and attended by more than 400 Marxist scholars from 20 countries, is the biggest academic conference on Marxism held in China, according to a report by the Global Times.

Observers stated that the congress helped China in discussing its problems during a critical transition period.

"China faces an increasing number of problems in the midst of its economic slowdown and deepening reform, such as corruption and the growing income gap, which require the country to use Marxism to explain and solve them," said Xin Xiangyang, a research fellow on Marxism at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Furthermore, Xin views the congress as an opportunity for Western countries to learn from China, considering the fact that the latter's adherence to Marxism has yielded favorable social and economic results.

President Xi Jinping's emphasis on the ideology has only intensified efforts of reinstating it as the theoretical foundation of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

In January, President Xi declared that Marxist philosophy provides CPC members with the right approach to problem-solving and that it will be instrumental in the path of development.

For Roderick MacFarquhar, a Harvard University professor, President Xi's proposition is the realization of the Chinese dream which is made possible by the country's creative development of Marxism.

China still has a long way to go to achieve a level of "common prosperity," however, as corruption is rampant in the government, said Wang Zhanyang from the Central Institute of Socialism.
