Prior to Liman, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" director Rupert Wyatt had been eyed by to direct "Gambit;" however, the filmmaker had reportedly dropped out of the project after Fox had sensed that he had not been as committed to the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Previously, Wyatt revealed that the reason for leaving "Gambit" was the timing, which clashed with rumors saying that the director left the film because of judgment differences with regard to the film script and budget, as per Cinema Blend.

Liman is known for directing the action thriller film "The Bourne Identity," action sci-fi "Jumper," thriller drama biopic "Fair Game," and the action sci-fi film "Edge of Tomorrow." Aside from the crime thriller film "Mena," which stars "Mission: Impossible" actor Tom Cruise as Barry Seal, Liman is also set to helm the action sci-fi film "Luna Park."

"Gambit" features the origin story of the Cajun mutant. At the moment, additional cast members and exact plot details have yet to be announced. Tatum is set to play the Cajun mutant while Lea Seydoux is rumored to play Bella Donna Boudreaux.

Marvel's "Gambit" solo film is slated to premiere in theaters in the United States on Oct. 7, 2016 while Liman's "Mena" is set to hit theaters on Jan. 6, 2017.
