Guillermo del Toro's horror thriller film "Crimson Peak" may not be supported by China.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, China would turn its back against films that showcased elements like ghosts, cults, or supernatural storylines in a lifelike approach, which can be referred to as "no-ghost protocol."
As per Cinema Blend, the ghostly elements featured in del Toro's film, which have already been seen in previous trailers, looked "cartoonish" and entirely "fake." Nonetheless, if the paranormal intimidation was lifelike in the film, that would not be permitted by the Chinese censors.
China's censorship guiding principle comes from the Communist Party's secular ideology and it disallows its theaters to run films that promote cults or superstition. This entails that "Crimson Peak" international gross would exclude China, which has a population of almost 1.4 billion.
After its release on Oct. 16 the film has got an estimated domestic gross of $15.3 million. Couple with an estimated $13.6 million gross from other countries, "Crimson Peak" has got an estimated total worldwide gross of $28.9 million.
"Crimson Peak" centers on a young woman, a writer who scooped up by an enigmatic and unfamiliar person to a house located on top of a mountain. After she discovers that there is an evil that inhabits the house, she must find a way to escape from the sinister house.
The upcoming film stars Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, and Charlie Hunnam, among others.
Along with del Toro directing the film, Matthew Robbins is on board to pen the film script. The film is produced by Maguy Cohen, Callum Greene, Jon Jashni, Thomas Tull, and Jillian Share.
Del Toro's "Crimson Peak" is now showing in theaters.
