Huawei Technologies Co., one of the largest telecommunications companies in China, officially launched a Telecom Seed Program for Namibian Information and Telecommunication (ICT) personnel on Tuesday.

The said program is set to give a two-week training session to 20 Namibian ICT personnel to be held at the company's head office in Shenzhen, China.

This is the first time Huawei is conducting a training course designed for Namibians.

The 20 Namibian trainees were selected by different ministries of the southwestern African government. The focus of their workshop will include network management, cyber security and ICT.

Huawei Namibia managing director Yin Xianyu said that the company is now serving over 2 million Namibians with its high-speed internet, digital television programs and voice communications ever since it entered Namibian market in 2005.

Deputy Minister Stanley Simataa of Namibia's Ministry of Information and Communication Technology said that he was grateful for Huawei's training sponsorship. He admitted that their country is currently experiencing an "acute shortage" of ICT professionals.

Simataa also encouraged the 20 trainees to make the best out of the training and contribute for the development of the ICT industry.

The training was placed into a commitment when Prime Minister Hage Geingob visited Huawei's headquarters in China in April.

Huawei's products and solutions are being deployed to over 170 countries worldwide.
