"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 might have commenced with a look at what happens three years into the future, but there is much happening in the present. While the characters are still in Mystic Falls/at Whitmore/first focusing on Lily and her family of heretics, episode 5 will see Alaric making a decision about Jo and Bonnie's future.

Viewers can recall that Alaric has had a rough love life, and just as he was about to get married in season 6 and expecting to start a family with Jo, Kai struck and killed his dreams. Life became difficult for Alaric to the extent that he even held a gun to his head in season 6 finale.

Season 7 premiere saw Alaric supposedly drinking his way through Europe with Damon as Bonnie played chaperone. However, as Damon and Bonnie later figured out, Alaric was not really drinking but instead he was visiting psychics because he did not want to forget Jo. Currently, Alaric is planning to use the Phoenix Stone to bring Jo back to life, and as an experiment revealed, it could be possible to have her back.

The biggest issue is that when he brought Bonnie in on the plan and she looked at the Phoenix Stone, it resulted into terrible visions, loss of time, and crippling headaches for her.

While Alaric said that he destroyed the Stone, when the signs continued, Bonnie doubted the assertion. A visit to the missing sixth heretic, Oscar, and her quest that he assists her implied Alaric had to be truthful concerning the Phoenix Stone.

Alaric eventually explained that he had to take the small chance, although the Other Side no longer existed, that he can bring Jo back and brought Bonnie to the morgue. According to Entertainment Weekly, they are running out of time to use the Phoenix Stone on Jo.

The report read, "Let's just say that as of next week, Alaric is running out of time if he intends to use it on Jo. Here's the thing about dead bodies: They don't keep forever. So, Alaric is going to be faced with a big decision."

Meanwhile, while a look into Bonnie's future in three years has not yet been unveiled, it will come soon. The first three episodes have concentrated on the lives of Stefan, Damon, Caroline, and Tyler.

Season 7 episode 5 will have a look at Bonnie's future as Kat Graham told the US Magazine, and that will include a look at her love life.

Graham said, "You are going to see a love interest coming in Episode 5 in Bonnie's flash forward. We get to see who she basically ends up with, which is very cool. And then you see a current, modern potential love interest coming this season also."

"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 airs Thursdays on the CW at 8 p.m.
