McConaughey was offered an unspecified villain role in Gunn's upcoming film "Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2;" however, the actor did not accept the role, according to Variety. At present, Marvel Studios and Gunn are in search for an actor to play the villain role.

McConaughey is also known for his roles in Jeff Nichols' drama film "Mud," Jean-Marc Vallee's drama biopic "Dallas Buyers Club," Martin Scorsese's comedy crime "The Wolf of Wall Street," and Christopher Nolan's sci-fi "Interstellar."

"Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2" also stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper (voice), Vin Diesel (voice), Sean Gunn, Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker, and possibly Howard the Duck, among others.

"Sicario" star Benicio del Toro is also set to reprise his role as The Collector while the director teased that there would be one Sneeper in the film. The newest addition to the cast ensemble is "Oldboy" actress Pom Klementieff, who has landed one of the new key roles in Gunn's film sequel. It is rumored that the actress would play the role of half-Korean, half-German Mantis in the film.

Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2" starts principal production in 2016 and is slated to premiere in theaters in United States on May 5, 2017.
