It looks like Wilkin Brattle (Lee Jones) is taking his final bow in the FX drama series "The Bastard Executioner."
According to Variety, "The Bastard Executioner" is laying down its sword after its season 1 finale aired on Nov. 17. Kurt Sutter, the series' creator and showrunner, told the publication that the number had not sustained the cost of the series, suggesting that it was all math at the end of the day.
Sutter added that he and his team could not have established that "core audience" that allowed them identify their marketing framework and whether or not the show was within one's means. According to the showrunner, the audience had spoken and inopportunely, the word was "meh." For the director, this was one reason to bring the mythology to an epic and heated finale.
Also, Sutter is aware that ratings indicate his role as a series showrunner. In his interview with Deadline, "The Bastard Executioner" creator said that while good reviews were wonderful and so were awards, ratings concerned him very much because his job as a storyteller was to engage and hook the audience.
In addition, Sutter expressed his appreciation to the cast and crew of "The Bastard Executioner" for their hardwork. He told Variety that he loved his cast and crew so much. The showrunner added that while they were primarily British actors and had various thoughts about the job, they had bonded by the finale and had been so excited about the show and its mythology.
It is expected that Sutter would not be out of a job long and he would start hiring a Latino showrunner who would spearhead a "Sons of Anarchy" spin-off, putting emphasis on the Mayan biker club. Known for directing eight episodes of the television series "Sons of Anarchy, Sutter also wrote the teleplay for one episode of "The Shield" and the screenplay of Antoine Fuqua's "Southpaw."
For Sutter, creating and running "The Bastard Executioner" was a great ride and he and his team had done something great that they were proud of.
