The inauguration of the new campus built by a Chinese company for the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ghana was held on Thursday, Nov. 19, the Xinhua News Agency reported.
The new campus, located in Ho, some 138 km from the capital, Accra, was built for the School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences of the university, according to the report.
The report said that the campus was constructed by Yanjian Group in cooperation with the Chinese government through the latter's development agency China Aid, which provided $17 million and additional funding from the Ghanaian government amounting to $940,000.
There are a total of 11 structures and parking lots, basketball courts, roads and other facilities in the campus.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, who expressed appreciation of the Chinese government's support, saying that the project has further strengthened the relationship that has always existed between the two countries.
Sun Baohong, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, said that the campus is another landmark and a reflection of the friendly relations between peoples of the two countries.
Sun said that the Chinese government would also provide furniture and other appliances to further enhance the hardware of the university, to give way to the request of Ghanaian side.
Minister for Education Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman said that the inauguration of the new campus is another milestone in the effort to deliver good-quality education to Ghanaians.
The university received certification from the World Health Organization for leading the Ebola vaccine trials in Ghana.
When the university started in 2012, it has only 155 students. Now it has 2,044 students, the report said.
