Guo Jingyu, who will be the new show's executive producer, said last week in Beijing that the series would not feature established actors or actresses to play Guo Jing, the hero, or Huang Rong, the heroine.

The production team is planning to work with a satellite TV station to create a reality show that will let the audience vote for young and new talents to play the lead roles in the show.

"Our TV adaption of the novel will try to attract viewers born after 1990 through getting them involved," said Guo, who is also known as a famous director and playwright in China.

The production team, said Guo, is also planning to work with Sina Weibo, so that netizens can nominate performers to play the roles of Guo and Huang. There will also be a mobile online game with the same title.

The original novel was first published during the 1950s. It has spawned more than 14 film and television adaptations in both mainland China and Hong Kong.

Chen Manling, the screenwriter of the upcoming series, said that the novel took great care in depicting its characters, and she would not change the plot or characters.

The TV drama is produced by Huace Film & TV and Perfect World Pictures.
