Innovation is finally catching up. There is a new camera that has the ability to see solid objects around a corner.
Working as an x-ray periphery vision, this camera uses a staccato burst of laser fire. The laser is the main tool that tracks movements, shapes and even eye contact barred by walls and corners.
According to Nature, this is a an important feature especially if the user would like to go around any impossible or dangerous obstacle.
Because of this popular idea, scientists had tried on doing a turn-around by reconstructing the shape of the object hidden from the view, but this does not allow the camera to capture in real time.
So, when a team of scientists and engineers came together, they tried to eliminate the problem of real-time photo capture. The team, led by Daniele Faccio and Genevieve Gariepy at the Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, was able to successfully create this camera.
"Most people were trying to reconstruct in 3D, but we were trying to track," team member Genevieve Gariepy said. "We developed new algorithms to be able to achieve this, and achieve it fast."
According to New Scientist, the team did their experiments in the dark. They used the infrared laser installed in the camera.
Now, they are developing a portable system that can detect multiple objects in long distances. This would be a useful tool in scanning large infrastructures during search-and-rescue missions.
"We would like to bring it forward and have it closer for people to use in applications," Gariepy said.
