The New York Knicks are rumored to target Brandon Jennings as the team looks to solve point guard issues.
Dec. 15 marks the unofficial start of trade season, and the Knicks are speculated to be one of the teams to join the trading frenzy.
According to Marc Berman of the New York Post, the Knicks plans to address their inconsistency at the guard spot, but will have to wait until summer to lure the likes of Mike Conley and Rajon Rondo.
With the Knicks hoping for a playoff run this year, they may be forced to opt for a quick fix at the PG position and Detroit Pistons' Jennings is one of New York's leading targets.
Berman wrote: "The Knicks have an overflow of big men to deal as point guard is the roster's key issue, with the inconsistencies of Jose Calderon and Grant."
"One point guard available now is Detroit's backup Brandon Jennings."
The Knicks, who currently have an 11-14 record, are looking to strengthen their position in the Eastern Conference, but their lackluster backcourt has not been helpful in their cause to be a legitimate postseason contender.
The Knicks' PGs Jose Calderon and Jeraint Grant have yet to display effectiveness under Derek Fishers' triangle-offense. Calderon only averages 7.6 points and 3.7 assists, while Grant contributes 5.5 points and 2.5 assists per game.
However, there is not much guarantee that Jennings would be effective as well.
The former Bucks point guard, who is set for his season debut this month, has yet to showcase what he has left after recovering from an Achilles tear.
Berman also noted that teams like the Knicks may have to wait until Jennings play a few games to gauge his trade value and contribution post-injury.
ESPN's trade machine approved a trade of Jennings for Calderon and Grant, but with the Knicks could probably include the package with one of their tradable big men.
The Pistons are in need of interior help, so trading for a guy like Derrick Williams would be the wise move for Detroit.
Meanwhile, the Knicks would probably look for more options other than an ailing Jennings. But if Jennings could still display his elite form prior to a career-threatening injury, he could be the missing piece the Knicks are looking for to push hard for a playoff run.
