Google Play Books now includes Night Light mode, combating the restless nights.

The new mode will use hues of amber based on available natural sunlight to filter blue light, and therefore reduce eye strain. In the early part of the day, book pages will appear in the color setting the user has chosen. As the day goes on, the pages will become the warm amber color. Night Light automatically adapts to user region's level of natural sunlight based on the time of day.

The toggle, found in the same part of the UI as all the other in-text visual adjustments, works by slowly removing the amount of blue light on the screen the later in the day it is. The visual effect is to give the background an amber color which is supposedly less likely to cause visual strain in low ambient light.

In addition, it offers an option to receive notifications any time an author of a book from the user’s library publishes a new book on the Play Store, which could be quite handy according to CNet. This is enabled by default and includes all authors, but you can disable it in Settings > Notifications (at bottom) > Author (check box).

Google said that Night Light has already rolled out to Android and iOS devices. Users can activate the mode on their smartphone or tablet via a pop-up notification the next time they open a digital book.

Similar feature was launched by other tech companies, Gizmodo reported. Amazon launches Blue Shade for Fire tablets, which uses specialized filters to limit exposure to blue light.
