When it comes to feeling overwhelmed or unmotivated to do tasks ranging from fulfilling simple New Year's resolutions to work tasks, talking to other people can help.

Individuals who slack off can get an emotional and mental boost through social support, whether they are looking at knocking an item off their to-do lists, such as shedding excess pounds, or embarking on big career goals.

In an interview with The Huffington Post, life coach Stefanie Ziev said conversing to a life coach may help people overcome mental block to undertake something.

Consulting a therapist who can help troubled individuals find long-term emotional resolutions to deeply ingrained past issues can also be helpful in enabling them to move on.

The mere thought of having to accomplish something alone can be daunting for some people. With social support, people not only ease stress but also jumpstart the life changes they want to do.

A study published in the journal Psychiatry supported the view that talking to fellow human beings and getting a positive feedback mechanism can make people be more proactive.

It also provides defense from physical and mental afflictions.  The release of the hormone oxytocin that engulfs a person with feelings of satisfaction and love, coupled with social support, can quash anxiety.

Talking to other people, particularly recognized experts or individuals who have gone through similar life experiences, fosters good coping strategy and puts people on the right track.

In his book, "The Happiness Advantage: The Seven Principles of Positive Psychology That Fuel Success and Performance at Work," author Shawn Achor emphasized that optimism and happiness drive performance and lead to achievement, not the other way around.

Having the right mindset and being free of counterproductive stress, that can happen when individuals talk to licensed professionals and/or get ample emotional support from well-meaning family members and friends, are vital.
