Miss Universe Singapore 2014

Rathi Menon, Miss Universe Singapore, has revealed her Venezuelan-made national costume, which she'll be wearing at the coronation night of the Miss Universe 2014 coronation night.

Menon's Instagram account showed a laced-leotard filled with silver and gold stars matched with knee-high boots and a crescent moon accessory.

Alejandro Fajardo Diaz, the Venezuelan celebrity designer, is the person responsible for it, the New Paper revealed.

Diaz's history in pageant gown-making includes designing for several other countries' former Miss Universe and Miss Earth contestants.

Years back, Miss Universe Singapore contestants' costumes received much criticism, including those that resembled their national flower the Vanda, an their national symbol, the Merlion.

These previous costumes, which were worn in Miss Universe 2013 and 2008, respectively, were made by Riyan Haffys, a local designer. Haffys attended Lassale Arts College and Nanyang Fine Arts Academy for a fashion design course that he wasn't able to finish.

In 2009, the Miss Universe Singapore wore an orchid inspired costume, designed by Xiaoqin Zhang, a fashion-design student. This was picked from the 10 colorful designs that were submitted by the students of the Raffles Design Institute. The year after, the country's national costume was heavily inspired by the country's architectural design, fashioned by Tracy Wu, another student of the Raffles Design Institute.

By 2011, the country's Miss Universe entry wore a costume designed by Hayden Ng, a popular local designer, the same person who dressed Miss Universe Singapore 1987. The design was more of a "kuah", a Peranakan wedding gown.

The Miss Universe 2014 coronation night will be on Jan. 25, Sunday.
