Ian Somerhalder plays the lead character of Damon in "The Vampire Diaries" TV show.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 is speculated to be the last season of the series. In a recent interview, lead actor Ian Somerhalder confirmed that he has his doubts over the future of the show. Somerhalder added that they are trying to get through "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 for now. The series has seen lower ratings since Nina Dobrev's exit from the show and got pushed to Fridays for the first time in show's history.

"The Vampire Diaries," the highly popular supernatural television show, is nothing less than a cult. It is not easy to be on air for seven glorious years, having a huge and loyal fan base that follow the series with reverence. In all likelihood, curious fans are wondering as to how many more seasons they will spend with Damon, Stefan and the rest of the Mystic Falls favorites. Dobrev's exit from the show clearly affected the ratings so much, so that her look-alike Leslie Anne Huff was cast as Elena Gilbert.

Somerhalder recently shared with Entertainment Tonight regarding putting an end to "The Vampire Diaries" series, "It's something that everyone is talking about and there is a lot of speculation about it because we're so far into it." He further added, "I'll be honest with you, right now we're just trying to get through this one and just make this a really, really good season of television."

According to Inquistr, Somerhalder is having trouble with his co-stars, specifically Paul Wesley, Candace King and Kat Graham, who wants Dobrev back to the show. Somerhalder is reportedly not excited about the idea of working with his ex-girlfriend anymore. Since Somerhalder and his wife, Nikki Reed, are ready to start a family soon, speculation suggests that "The Anomaly" star will quit the series after season seven.

CW's series has suffered huge fan base lose because of Dobrev's exit. With two main characters gone and dwindling ratings, the series seems to be leaving its meritorious life. "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 has gripping plot supported by believable characters to enchant fans, with some swoon-worthy moments and heart-wrenching romance, but any of that has not been fruitful.

Elena's departure from "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 is said to be because of her fallout with her co-star and ex-boyfriend Somerhalder. The disappointed fans and Dobrev's exit gave creators some tough time brainstorming for the sudden changes in the storyline.

"The Vampire Diaries" airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
