There may have been those who doubted whether or not the foot injury was legit, but UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos wasn't taking that chance.

Dos Anjos pulled out of the main event at UFC 196 against Conor "Notorious" McGregor after he claims he had suffered a broken foot just last week during training.

The highly-anticipated showdown between UFC lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos (25-7) and challenger, featherweight title holder Conor "Notorious" McGregor (19-2) which was set to take place March 5 in Las Vegas was put on the shelf.

The organization is currently scrambling to find a suitable replacement although no announcements have been made as yet. With a little under two weeks left to the fight, it will be difficult for the UFC to find someone to fill in for Dos Anjos and keep McGregor on the card.

The situation is similar to what McGregor had experienced with former featherweight champion Jose Aldo last year. Then champion Aldo had been scheduled to defend his title at UFC 189 against McGregor but had to pull out due to a rib injury.

Dos Anjos however, posted a photo of his left foot on his official Facebook account.

"Throughout my career in 32 fights I never need to cancel any fight due to an injury," the post roughly translates to.

"This is a contact sport and anything can happen. I believe that God knows everything and the best is yet to come."

The UFC has apparently tried to contact a few fighters, namely Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo, who have refused a fight with McGregor on short notice. Donald Cerrone and Nate Diaz are currently frontrunners to land the fight with Diaz being the most probable.
