Ian Somerhalder plays the lead character of Damon Salvatore in "The Vampire Diaries."

The reunion of Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev will finally see the light of day in "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 finale episode. The executive producer of the show revealed that there are a lot of ideas that will make their reunion possible by this season's end.

The rumours of Somerhalder and Dobrev's reunion on "The Vampire Diaries" sparked when Dobrev broke up with her boyfriend, Austin Stowell. It is said that apart from exploring new opportunities, Dobrev had left the popular supernatural drama series because of her boyfriend's insecurities.

It is reported that the former "The Vampire Diaries" co-stars might reunite in the series, as the actress is single now. The onscreen couple's fans are hoping for the reunion of the duo in this season of "The Vampire Diaries."

Dobrev was dating Somerhalder and they split after three years of courtship. Dobrev reportedly got close to Stowell, and Somerhalder got married to Nikki Reed. Speculations are rife that "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 will be the last one from the series, due to fall in the ratings. According to TV Fanatic, the show had just 1.1 million viewers with 0.4 rating in the first half of season 7.

In addition to this, Somerhalder revealed that he wants to start family with Reed. It is being reported that Somerhalder might not return for new seasons of "The Vampire Diaries."

However, the rumours of reunion are still plagued as the series creator Julie Plec has weighed in for Dobrev's presence, TV Line reported. She said that if there is ever a last episode, then she wants Dobrev to be a part of it. Plec has also revealed that until Somerhalder and Paul Weasley will be part of show, the series will go on. She said that an ending is in sight since the major character of Elena Gilbert, played by Dobrev, left the series. Season 7 of "The Vampire Diaries' will continue on Friday nights on the CW.

Meanwhile, rumours are also doing the rounds that there are some issues going on with Somerhalder and Reed; however, the couple has pinned down all the rumours by walking down together at many red carpet events. Somerhalder even went to the extent of gushing about his wife during his interviews.
