Ian Somerhalder plays the lead character of Damon Salvatore in "The Vampire Diaries."

TV rating giant "The Vampire Diaries" may end after its Season 8, according to comments from male lead star Ian Somerhalder at Nashville's 2016 WalkerStalkerCon on April 10, Sunday.

"The Vampire Diaries" is about to wrap up its seventh season with the finale to air on May 13. On March 11, the CW renewed the series for an eighth season.

Now, fans across the globe could be saying goodbye to Stefan and Damon Salvatore et al after the latest season renewal of the hit supernatural TV series. The 37-year-old actor confirmed that the upcoming Season 8 will be the last of the smug yet purely evil vampire named Damon.

"We have decided to do one last season to really do the story justice," he said. "My role is shifting in the show, and we have a lot to do, basically," Somerhalder added, according to the convention's official twitter account.

However, a CW spokesperson said that there is no decision has yet been made with respect to the show's fate, Variety reported. Although the giant broadcasting company has yet to officially confirm that the show may be coming to an end, the sad news comes just days after star Kat Graham, who plays Bonnie Bennet, revealed that Season 8 will be her last.

The said reports coincide with some earlier speculations stating that the TV series will soon come to end after the show was pushed to a Friday time slot. The rumor mill has it that when a show gets Friday night timeslot, it generally makes a straight shot to be crossed out or is experiencing low ratings.

The supernatural drama TV series experienced a tremendous drop-off with the exit of Nina Dobrev, who plays protagonist Elena Gilbert, in the show. Numerous sources claim that the show's ebb and flow rating had dropped by around 33 percent in Season 7, as some fans have seemingly lost interest in the show following Dobrev's departure.

The critically acclaimed TV series is said to be the most-watched series on The CW network before being supplanted by "Arrow." Ever since it's premiere on Sept. 10, 2009, the series has maintained an audience of more than 2 million viewers across the globe.

The series is set in the anecdotal town of Mystic Falls, Virginia - a town accused of supernatural history since its settlement of transients from New England in the late 19th century. It follows the life of Elena Gilbert, a 162-year-old vampire named Stefan Salvatore and his malicious and mysterious older brother, Damon.
