Ian Somerhalder plays the lead character of Damon in "The Vampire Diaries" TV show.

"The Vampire Diaries" star Ian Somerhalder recently confirmed that the upcoming eighth season of the hit The CW series will be its last.

According to US Weekly, the actor recently attended a fan convention in Nashville last weekend to talk about the show.

While there, he said that they have decided to go for another season and to use it as a way of wrapping up the entire story since season 1.

"We have decided to do one last season to really do the story justice," he said.

This means that Kat Graham's exit from the series wouldn't be such a huge heartbreak to her fans.

After all, her exit will come after the show actually wraps as well.

While speaking with the same publication, Graham confirmed her exit from the franchise and said that she hopes she will have the chance to work with the crew of "The Vampire Diaries.

Meanwhile, executive producer Julie Plec also spoke with TV Line before "The Vampire Diaries" was officially renewed for season 8 to say that she will saw goodbye to the franchise when Somerhalder and Paul Wesley are both ready to do the same.

"I basically committed to Ian and Paul that when they're ready to be done, I'll be done. They could be ready very soon, or they could really want to stick it out. Right now, that's up to them. I'm with them as long as I feel like I can keep telling stories for them," she said.

At that time, Plec also hinted on the possibility of Nina Dobrev returning to the series for the finale season.

"That said, there's still a chapter of Elena's story left to be told. I'll take Dobrev for whatever she's willing to do to tell that story," she said.

In other news, the upcoming episode of "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 will see the villainous character who is using Stefan's body giving Damon some serious conditions.

In order to stop the fake Stefan from killing even more innocent people, Damon would have to do what he asks him to do.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
