Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is off to a flying start this season, and it's all because of Tetsuro Araki's geniuses of creating of anime series that presents avant-garde art style, incredible musical score, high-octane storyline and of course, badass characters.
Speaking of the characters, the one that definitely stood out after two episodes (if you already watched the raw version of episode 2) is no other than the girl of the season, the zombie butt-kicking Mumei.
How would I describe Mumei? Well, imagine the irresistible cuteness of Yuna (Final Fantasy franchise), quirkiness of Haruhi Suzumiya (the melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) and the fighting ability of Mikasa Ackerman (Attack on Titan) all packed in one female character.
So who is Mumei?
According to character information released by Wit Studio, Mumei is a teen who has been in the Iron Fortress. Several years ago before the start of the story, Mumei was actually bitten by a Kabane but somehow managed to restrain the virus from reaching her brain (just like the main character Ikoma).
She later realized she's no longer a human or a Kabane. She turned into a kabaneri, being that exist between a human and kabane possessing incredible dexterity, speed, strength and most of they are already immune to a Kabane bite.
The star of the show
While Kabaneri's protagonist Ikoma has already shown his own imprint of 'badass-ness,' there's no denying that Mumei stole the thunder from the main character so far in the series. Let's be honest, everyone's jaw dropped when Mumei chopped off the head of a Kabane 3x her size with a blade-enhanced super-kick. From that point, we all knew that she's going to slay more zombies Mumei style.
Below is by far the best scene of the series when Mumei went beast mode on dozens of rabid Kabanes at Arawakin Station.
Again, Mumei already blew away the competition as the best female character this season. As a matter of fact, should she continue to do more of these epic scenes, she may have a chance to end up among the most popular female protagonist of all time. And yep, more Mumei fighting scene please in the next episode.
