'Descendants of the Sun' star Song Joong Ki is not returning for Season 2: reports

Descendants of the Sun is a 2016 South Korean television series starring Song Joong-ki, Song Hye-kyo, Kim Ji-won, and Jin Goo.

"Descendants of the Sun" Season 2 rumors abound, and one of the strongest is the non-ending talks swirling that Song Joong Ki's character, Army Captain Yoo Si Jin aka Big Boss, will not be returning to the show.

Reports emerged that the 30-year-old star may not return for a second season after several speculations asserting that the star is stepping out of the limelight, as he is reportedly not happy with all the fame and publicity surrounding him.

In an interview last April 15 in Seoul, the Hallyu star said that he is slightly disturbed that his phenomenal fame has affected his privacy and that his family has been exposed to the media. Further, a photo of his ex-girlfriend made the rounds in the online world.

"To say that these are things I need to endure for the sake of celebrity... that's sad," The Straits Times quoted the actor as saying.

Now, news that the Hallyu star will not be returning to the series comes, as the KBS2 drama remains on the bubble for its potential second season renewal. President of KBS' drama department, Jung Song Ho, earlier said that talks are underway to renew the blockbuster hit drama.

A renewal - which President Jung say is highly likely - would come airing sooner or later in 2017. However, it remains uncertain whether it will serve as a sequel to the first season or it will embrace an entirely different storyline inspired by the original plotline, as the project does not require all the people who were involved in the previous drama.

"We have to keep discussing whether it will be a story of a soldier or not," President Jung said, according to Naver TV, as cited by Soompi. "We are advancing with projects that the production team and cast can consent to. We also have to think about the aspect of pre-production."

Nonetheless, it is also worth noting that nothing has been officially set in stone just yet. In other news, the cast members and OST singers of the hit drama will hold a special concert on May 14 at Kyonggi University in Seoul, South Korea.

As per reports, the OST concert will commence at 3 PM KST and will be trailed by another performance at 7 PM KST. The cast members - Jin Goo, Kim Ji Won, Lee Seung Joon and Seo Jung Yeon - already confirmed their guest appearance on the said show.
