"The Mummy" reboot will hit theaters on June 9, 2017.

"The Mummy" reboot is official, as Universal Studios has revealed the first synopsis of the much-awaited remake of the 1999 hit movie.

In an official press release, Universal Studios stated that "The Mummy" reboot will "usher in a new world gods and monsters." The ancient baddie takes the form of a queen portrayed by Sofia Boutella ("Kingsman: The Secret Service"), Screen Crush reported. The ancient queen suffered a terrible circumstance when she was living, and now that she has been awakened from the dead, she will bring malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

In the long-running history of "The Mummy" movies, this is the first time that the lead mummy is a female character. In Brandon Fraser's 1999 "The Mummy," the ancient villain was High Priest Imhotep, played by Arnold Vosloo. In the classic "The Mummy" movie back in 1932, the monster was consistently a male mummy.

On one hand, "The Mummy" reboot is set in modern times, with Tom Cruise playing the role of a former special services soldier who comes across an ancient tomb in Egypt. Annabelle Walis, Jake Johnson and Courtney B. Vance will also join Cruise and Boutella in "The Mummy" reboot.

In addition, Alex Kurtzman was tapped to direct "The Mummy" reboot, and at the same time, develop the story with Chris Morgan. The movie is currently being filmed in the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, it was also reported that Oscar-awardee Russell Crowe will take part in the movie. According to Variety, Crowe is in the talks to take on a Dr. Jekyll-type of role.

The Tom Cruise-starrer is just one of the many films lined up for Universal Studio's ambitious Monsters Cinematic Universe. The company is set to revive other classic horror figures including "The Wolf Man," "The Bride of Frankenstein" and "The Invisible Man," in which, Johnny Depp will star in a lead role.

Insiders teased that some of the classic monsters will make cameo appearances in "The Mummy" to introduce their individual spinoff projects. That said, it basically means that the Monsters Cinematic Universe will work the same way as Marvel's and DC Comics' superhero universes.

"The Mummy" reboot will hit theaters on June 9, 2017.
